GEA DairyFeed F4500, autonomous feeding robot

GEA is one of the world’s largest system providers for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. The internationally active industrial technology group focuses on machines and systems as well as sophisticated process technology, components and comprehensive services.
With the GEA DairyFeed F4500, GEA launched an autonomous feeding robot in 2022, thus consistently pursuing its focus on automation and digital solutions. InMach Intelligente Maschinen contributed its expertise in environmental sensing and navigation in particular to the development of the new feeding robot.

The environment sensing software with corresponding navigation software was developed by InMach Intelligente Maschinen and enables the feeding robot to be used on dairy farms. Precise automatic feeding on dairy farms with real-time control and reporting are GEA’s requirements for the autonomous feeding robot.
This new feeding robot is designed to help dairy farms reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs while increasing flexibility on the farm.

Rising feed costs, limited labor availability and unpredictable weather conditions are currently the biggest challenges for the profitability of dairy farms. Added to this is the enormous amount of work involved in providing several groups of animals with the right feed mix at the same time and in a targeted manner in order to achieve the best results in terms of animal welfare and productivity. Based on around 35 years of feeding expertise, the new GEA DairyFeed F4500 has been designed to take on this task independently.

The ISY UM 2 control system from InMach Intelligente Maschinen is responsible for environment sensing

The feeding robot has been equipped with navigation software from InMach, which ensures that it navigates safely around the farm.
Equipped with navigation sensors, the DairyFeed F4500 first creates an exact map of the farm and decides on the ideal route for feed distribution. This enables it to localize its position at all times, detect obstacles and avoid collisions. It can also navigate safely between several barns on uneven ground and navigate slopes of up to 10 percent without changing the infrastructure.
